Smithtown Police Blotter: Serial Thief Who Stole From 2 Stores 4 Times Arrested

ALSO: The man entered a Macy's he was banned from on two dates and then stole from a Walmart twice during July, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? These are recent incidents reported in the Smithtown area from July 21 through July 27.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Aug. 2: James Reyes, 47, of Bay Shore, entered Macy's in Smith Haven Mall on July 6, a store that he had previously been banned from, and stole items, police said. Reyes entered the same Macy's again on July 12 and stole more goods, police said. On July 22, Reyes stole assorted merchandise from Walmart on Crooked Hill Road in Commack, police said. Reyes went back to the same Walmart on July 27 and stole more merchandise, police said. He was arrested and charged with four counts of fourth-degree grand larceny: value of property more than $1,000 and two counts of third-degree burglary: illegal entry with intent to commit a crime, police said.

Incidents

  • July 30: Grand larceny (third-degree) and auto-stripping (third-degree) were reported on Smithtown Bypass in Smithtown at 8 p.m. Someone stole the front bumper off of a 2025 GMC pick-up truck, police said.
