Smithtown's St. Catherine Of Siena Cuts Ribbon On Center For Spine And Orthopedics

The center features a post-operative inpatient unit, a family waiting area and lounge, and a physical therapy and rehabilitation gym.

SMITHTOWN, NY — St. Catherine of Siena Hospital held a ribbon cutting this past week to unveil the hospital's Center for Spine and Orthopedics, Catholic Health announced.

The center features a newly renovated post-operative inpatient unit with private patient rooms, a family waiting area and lounge, and a physical therapy and rehabilitation gym. Hospital officials were joined by local elected officials and physicians from Long Island Spine Specialists, P.C., (LISS).

The center is the newest facility in Catholic Health’s Integrated Spine Service, a program that aims to offer premium spine and pain care at select Centers of Excellence and integrates all system facilities into a seamless referral network to facilitate high-quality, comprehensive spine care across Long Island.

"We hope our patients take comfort in knowing they are in a healing environment, with a dedicated and compassionate care team ready to assist them at every step of their recovery journey," said Christopher Nelson, president of St. Catherine of Siena Hospital. "I am confident that St. Catherine’s Center for Spine and Orthopedics will be a top regional destination for the highest level of spine and orthopedic care."

As part of St. Catherine of Siena Hospital’s journey to become a Center of Excellence, Catholic Health welcomed five fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic spine surgeons and three multi-board-certified physiatrists from LISS. The LISS team are joined by the Center’s highly trained orthopedic and post-operative nurses, patient care assistants and expert rehabilitation specialists, forming a collaborative team dedicated to providing safe, timely and holistic recoveries.

Upon admission to the Center, patients will receive specialty care packages containing flowers and blankets and be treated to a selection of signature dishes from the hospital’s executive chef.

Each patient is also welcome to have one guest stay overnight, allowing loved ones to play their integral role in the recovery process.

St. Catherine of Siena Hospital is also undergoing a $5 million operating room (OR) expansion to accommodate complex spine cases. The expansion, expected to be complete by December, will include state-of-the-art intraoperative imaging technology, providing surgeons with real-time, 3D imaging to increase precision through enhanced visualization of the anatomy.
