St. James Elementary Expresses Gratitude

Students donate more than 450 pounds of Halloween candy to troops overseas.

St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District collected more than 450 pounds of candy to be donated to military troops overseas.

The schoolwide candy drive, spearheaded by Janet Greenfield’s class, encouraged students to donate their extra Halloween candy.

Students wrote letters to the soldiers to be included with the 25 boxes of candy donations, which were sent to Operation Gratitude for distribution. Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000-plus care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and handmade items to soldiers.
