Fire Department Chases Smoke Smell

Volunteers respond to seven calls Saturday, including one where people were setting off fireworks illegally.

The Southampton Fire Department had a busy Saturday, but several reports of smoke in the area left officials scratching their heads.

Fire chiefs weren't able to locate the source of the smell, mainly around the village, Second Assistant Chief Chris Brenner said. "We could smell it, but we don't know exactly what it was," he said. Eventually it went away.

He said he heard reports of a similar situation as far west as Hampton Bays and as far east of East Hampton, however that could not be verified Saturday night.

The unsourced smoke was just one of seven calls on Saturday, Brenner said. Four were investigations for automatic alarms and three were fire-related calls.

The department also responded to a one call to find adults lighting fireworks on the corner of David White's Lane and Hampton Road. Police were handling the situation when fire officials left, Brenner said.
