Greenport-Sag Harbor Ferry Gets Final Approval

A passenger ferry connecting Greenport to Sag Harbor is expected to be up and running by the end of the month after the Suffolk County Legislature voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the fare rates, the last piece of a puzzle .

President Lynch will be working with Response Marine Principal Jim Ryan to conduct the Peconic Bay Water Jitney on a trial basis this summer to see if the project will be feasible in future years.

This summer at least, the Suffolk Legislature approved rates of $11 for one-way tickets and round-trip fares of $20 per passenger. The John Keith will fit 53 passengers per trip.

The Peconic Bay Water Jitney will pay each village $12,000 to dock on its shores, and according to an article in the Sag Harbor Express, Lynch is looking for at least 300 passengers daily to consider whether the venture is financially sound.

Residents on both sides of the Peconic Bay had expressed concern that to an already busy summer season in each bayside destination community.
