Missing Woman Found Dead In Flanders: Police

Her body was found in the marshland, police say.

FLANDERS, NY — A 79-year-old woman who was reported missing in Flanders Wednesday night was found dead, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, Stella Sayre was reported missing by family after she left her residence in Flanders on foot at about 10:15 p.m.

Over the course of several hours, the Southampton Town Police Department — assisted by the Southampton Town marine patrol unit, Southampton Village Police Department K-9 unit, the New York State Police; the Southampton Town Police Department's detective division, and an unmanned aircraft unit — searched the area.

On Thursday, at about 1:26 p.m., the Southampton Town Police Department received a call in reference to a deceased body discovered in the marshland east of June Avenue in Flanders, officials said.

Detectives were in the area from the previous evening searching for the woman; they responded to the area and located the body, later identified as Sayre, police said. Sayre had died, police said.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office was requested to the scene to conduct a follow-up investigation; at this time, police said there was no reason to believe she was the victim of foul play.

Southampton Town detectives will continue their investigation with the assistance of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, officials said.
