One thousand people are expected to take part in Soldier Ride The Hamptons on Saturday, many of them on bicycles.
Patch stopped in Rotations Bicycle Center in Southampton and asked for five recommendations for every cyclist. Here's what Rob Brown, the manager, suggested:
1. A cellphone mount
You don't have to leave your phone behind or miss important phone calls (Do pull over first before answering!). For the iPhone 5, Rotations offers Topeak RideCase for $49.99.
2. Packs
Keep personal items or emergency kits in these packs that strap underneath the bike seat or to the handlebars. They range in price from $30 to $35.
3. Multi-tools
"Not many people know how to use them, but if they do they can do lots with them, like adjust the seats," Brown said.
4. Blinking lights
The reflectors that come on most bikes are only useful if light shines directly in them. Blinking lights, on the other hand, draw motorists attention to the bike, making for a much safer situation. "I recommend these even in the day time," Brown said.
5. The perfect seat
Nothing will make a bigger difference on your ride that a comfortable seat. Rotations sells all types, including ones specifically designed for men and women. Seats run the gamut in price from $39.95 to $165.
