Sagaponack Releases Police Department Proposals; Discussion Set

Three proposals will be discussed on Sept. 7. at 9:00 a.m.

On Saturday morning, Sagaponack residents are being asked to voice their opinion to form a new police department that is expected to save thousands of tax dollars.

The meeting, which will be held at village hall at 9 a.m. aims to gather feedback on three scenarios that were presented on Wednesday and posted on the village's website.

Proposal 1:

Year-found police coverage for a single day-time shift by a village police force, which would be housed on the second floor of village hall and made up of a part-time chief and 6-8 part-time officers. Back-up would be provided by neighboring police departments though an agreement.

Proposal 2:
A full-day, year-round police department, staffed by a chief and 12 to 14 officers. The department would be modeled after a Head of The Harbor's Department in Brookhaven.

Proposal 3:
A village police department that would include full-day, year-round coverage with a part-time chief and six full-time officers. Back-up would be provided by neighboring police departments though an agreement.

Estimated costs for the scenarios, include $1.2 million for a part-time department to $1.7 million for a full-time department and each scenario the village said will result in tax savings from between 24 percent for a full-time, day shift police department to 46 percent in savings with a part-time scenario.
