VIDEO: Lenox Hill Discharges 1,000th Coronavirus Patient

Ramdeo Radhay, 61, was discharged Thursday after a 10-day stay in the Upper East Side hospital.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The Upper East Side's Lenox Hill Hospital discharged its 1,000th coronavirus patient Thursday after the 61-year-old man recovered from a severe case of the virus that nearly required intubation, the hospital announced this week.

Ramdeo Radhay, 61, was discharged from the hospital on Thursday after a 10-day stint at the Upper East Side medical facility, a spokesperson for Northwell Health — the hospital system that operates Lenox Hill — said. Radhay made a quick recovery from the virus following a decision to enroll him in a clinical trial to receive plasma donations containing coronavirus antibodies, a hospital spokesperson said.

Radhay's discharge is a "huge milestone" for Lenox Hill, Associate Chair for Inpatient Medicine Nazish Ilyas said. Ilyas, who treated Radhay, said his case was a "special one" because of the severity of his sickness when he was admitted to the hospital. At one point doctors were considering putting Radhay on a ventilator.

"It's really in the last 72 hours or so that his trajectory changed. He received various treatments but at all times was requiring very high amounts of oxygen, he was at the cusp of being intubated a few times during his course," Ilyas said.

Before being admitted to the hospital, Radhay lost his job at an auto repair shop due to the coronavirus pandemic's effects on the economy. Radhay immigrated to the United States from Guyana in 2011 and lives with his wife and three of his children. He has five children, two of whom are adopted.

Radhay was wheeled out of Lenox Hill hospital surrounded by cheering healthcare workers on Thursday. Two of Radhay's sons, who work at Lenox Hill, were present during the celebration, a Lenox Hill spokesperson said.
