UES PTA Treasurer Stole $185K From Parents Group, Prosecutors Say

Marc Haynes allegedly embezzled tens of thousands of dollars spent on luxury vacations and designer goods, prosecutors said.

UPPER EAST SIDE — The treasurer of a public school parents group pilfered $185,000 from the association to fund luxurious trips to Bermuda and designer goods from Fendi, prosecutors contend.

Marc Haynes, former co-treasurer of PS 267's Parent Teacher Association, was indicted Tuesday in Manhattan supreme court on grand larceny charges, District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.

“Haynes is accused of using his own child’s elementary school PTA to bankroll luxury vacations, shopping sprees," said Bragg, "and even to pay court-ordered restitution from a prior conviction for stealing from his former employer."

Haynes embezzled cash from checking accounts tied to the PTA at East Side Elementary, on East 63rd Street between Second and Third avenues, from October 2020 through July 2021, prosecutors contend.

The co-treasurer used the stolen funds to pay credit card bills for charges at luxury hotels in St. Lucia and Bermuda, and items bough at Fendi, Restoration Hardware, and Pottery Barn, said prosecutors.

A PTA new co-treasurer tipped off the Manhattan DA's office in October 2021 after finding a suspicious $9,081 transaction in one of the accounts, prosecutors said.

Instead of providing documentation to back the charge, Haynes resigned from his position, prosecutors said.

This is not the first time Haynes has faced a grand larceny charge.

Haynes was convicted for stealing from a publishing company, and sentenced to five years of probation and $51,247 in restitution, prosecutors said.

According to Bragg, Haynes used PTA funds to pay the money he owed to the publishing house.
