INWOOD, NY — Police officers shot and killed a man in Inwood early Sunday morning who was waving a gun in the middle of an arguing crowd, police said.

Officers from the 34th Precinct spotted the man with a gun in his hand on Nagle Avenue and Dyckman Street about 3 a.m., police said.

The cops jumped out of the car, repeatedly told the 29-year-old man to drop his weapon — then shot him when he refused to do so, according to the NYPD.

The man took a gunshot wound to the chest and later died at a local hospital, police said.

"We do not know exactly what the circumstances were out here, we're still investigating the disturbance," NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeff Maddrey said during a press conference on Sunday. "But there were a lot of people out here and we're gonna ask everybody, anybody who was out here who may have seen anything to please call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS."

Another person suffered a graze wound during the dispute, but police are still investigating how it happened.

Police said that they don't know why the 29-year-old pulled out a gun.

After the shooting, the family of the man who was shot and killed identified him to multiple publications as Joel Capellan.

“I will remember my brother for the loving man he was and how his smile brightened the room,” said Capellan’s sister, Kayla Capellan, to Pix 11.

Capellan's sister also told Pix 11 that the 29-year-old had gotten out of jail almost a year ago and "was trying to be a better person."

“All he wanted to be was happy," Kayla told Pix11. "He was getting his life together."
