Fire Kills 7-Year-Old Boy In Washington Heights

Police said the boy was found after a blaze engulfed the basement and first floor of the building.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY – A 7-year-old boy was killed and a woman seriously hurt in a fire in the basement of a Washington Heights apartment building.

The blaze had engulfed the basement and first floor of 660 West 178 St. before firefighters managed to put it out early Saturday, police said.

The Daily News reported that the boy, identified by the NYPD as Robert Resto, was found underneath a bed in the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 54-year-old woman, who the Daily News said was Robert's grandmother, was taken to Jacobi Hospital.

The fire started at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Its cause is not yet known, police said.
