WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Police helicopters and boats scoured the Hudson River on Monday in an attempt to find a person who jumped off the George Washington Bridge, a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

The person is suspected to have jumped off the bridge after parking their car on the side of the New Jersey-bound lanes of the bridge, Port Authority Police spokeswoman Lenis Rodrigues said. The vehicle was discovered around 12:45 p.m., according to the spokeswoman.

Port Authority Police searched the river from the NYPD and FDNY, officials said. Poor conditions affected the New York City area on Monday, with snow and rain falling for much of the afternoon into the evening.

A body still hasn't been found as of early Monday evening, officials said.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has taken measures in recent years to limit the number of suicides that occur on the George Washington Bridge. The agency announced in 2017 that it would install an 11-foot-tall security fences on both the south and north sidewalks of the George Washington Bridge. The safety upgrades are part of the Port Authority's $1.9 billion "Restore the George" plan.
