Man Jumped To Death Off George Washington Bridge; Investigation Ongoing

It's the first suicide off the bridge this year.

An investigation continued Friday after a 23-year-old man jumped to his death off of the New York side of George Washington, authorities said, the first such death of 2017. Around 7 p.m. Thursday night, the Port Authority Police got a report from someone who said they saw a man jump over the railing on the south walkway, Joe Pentangelo, a Port Authority spokesman, told Patch.

Several Port Authority officers found the man next to the Little Red Lighthouse, Pentangelo said. He was pronounced dead at 7:26 p.m. An investigation is ongoing, and the man has not been identified.

It is the bridge's first suicide of 2017, and there have been five more "interventions" so far this year, Pentangelo said. While 18 people jumped to their death from the bridge in 2015, that number was down to 12 in 2016.
