INWOOD, NY - Most major crimes are down in the Inwood area this month compared with the same period last year, police data show.

The 34th precinct, which covers the neighborhoods of Inwood and Washington Heights north of West 179th Street, saw major crimes decrease by 1.6% from Sept. 25 to Oct. 22, per NYPD data. In New York City overall, major crimes fell 5.4%.

Robberies (three reported incidents) decreased by 50%; Burglaries (one reported incident) decreased by 75% and petit larcenies (30 reported incidents), or thefts under $1,000, decreased by 21.1%. Shootings are down 100%, compared with one reported incident during the same period last year.

Zero hate crimes and rapes were reported in the precinct during the same period for both years.

Some crimes, however, did see an increase in October this year: the 34th precinct reported one murder between Sept. 25 to Oct. 22, up from zero during the same period last year. Read more: Man Killed In Wash Heights Shooting Sunday Night: NYPD

Felony assaults are also up 42.9% (10 reported incidents), compared with seven incidents during the same period in 2022. The number of transit crimes remained the same, with one incident reported during the same period in both 2023 and 2022.

On the whole, the continued decline in crime statistics could be a promising sign during a time when New York City crime is still up in compared to recent history.

Major felonies are still up by 32% over pre-pandemic 2019 data, and by 13.7% compared to 10 years ago.

Despite the recent increases since the pandemic, reported crime is still lower for the Inwood area when compared to the late Giuliani administration. In 2022, reported crime was down by more than 22% compared to 2001 levels.
