INWOOD, NY — Police shot and killed a person during a drug operation in Inwood on Friday night, NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said during a press conference.

The New York Federal Task Force was conducting a "significant narcotics operation" in Inwood, when they attempted to arrest two men at 72 Vermilyea Ave., Maddrey said.

The pair of men began shooting at the law enforcement agents who entered the building, Maddrey said.

The task force returned fire and was able to grab one of the men without injury, police said.

The other man was believed to still be barricaded in the Inwood building, though, which the law enforcement agents surrounded, Maddrey said.

“Our units tried to make contact and after some time they were able to get a look inside and saw him lying down on the floor,” Maddrey said during the press conference.

The man was eventually found dead inside the apartment, police said. He had been shot during the initial shootout and died from his injuries, police said. Two guns were also recovered at the scene, police said.

Maddrey would not specify what the "significant drug operation" was looking into.

The identity of the man killed has not yet been released.
