WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — For the first time in its storied history, the Tony Awards will take place next year in Washington Heights.

The surprise announcement happened Tuesday morning, where organizers announced the 2023 award show for the best of Broadway would take place in the United Palace Theatre at 4140 Broadway, between West 175th and 176th streets.

“We are excited to bring the Tony Awards to the historic United Palace for the first time,” said Heather Hitchens, President and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, and Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League, in a joint statement. “As we celebrate the best of this Broadway season and 76 years of the Tony Awards, we look forward to ushering in a new golden age for the show from this majestic, golden age theatre.”

The United Palace Theatre opened in 1930 and currently has 3,400 seats.

The Washington Heights venue isn't a newcomer to hosting major events. This year it hosted the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival.

It is also the home theater of Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda, who grew up in Washington Heights and played a leading part in renovating and reopening the venue.

It also hosted a free movie series throughout the summer that was organized by Miranda.

Next year's ceremony will honor plays that opened on Broadway between April 29, 2022 and April 27, 2023.

The host of the show will be announced at a later date.
