WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY - A Washington Heights man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run last month that killed an 86-year-old woman in Greenpoint, authorities said.

Luis Sanchez Gutierrez, of Audubon Avenue, was charged Tuesday with manslaughter, failure to stop at a stop sign, leaving the scene of an accident and related charges, police said.

Sanchez Gutierrez blew a red light and made a left turn on Aug. 21 about 6:41 p.m. at the intersection of Richardson Street and Kingsland Avenue, striking 86-year-old Agustina Muniz, police said.

Muniz was crossing Richardson Street using a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash, police said.

Police found Muniz lying in the roadway after Sanchez Gutierrez fled in a 2019 Volvo dump truck, police said.

Medics transported Muniz to NYC Health & Hospitals/Woodhull where she was later pronounced dead.

The investigation remains ongoing.
