Wash Heights Pedestrian, 76, Struck And Killed Thursday: NYPD

The driver in the crash was traveling at a "high speed" near the Broadway intersection before the collision, police said.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY - An elderly man was struck and killed while attempting to cross a sidewalk in Washington Heights Thursday, authorities said.

Emergency responders responded to reports of the pedestrian-vehicle crash about 6:53 p.m. at the intersection of West 161 Street and Broadway, police said.

The victim, later identified as Washington Heights resident Julio Plaza, 76, was found unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway with apparent head and body trauma, police said.

Medics rushed the elderly victim to NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem where he later succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation from the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad found that a 2016 Dodge Charger, operated by a 27-year-old man, was traveling southbound on Broadway speeding towards the intersection at West 161 Street, police said.

Plaza was crossing Broadway in the southern marked crosswalk while he had the walk signal, police said.

The driver, who did not report any injuries as a result of the crash, remained at the scene, police said.

No arrests were announced as of Monday morning. The investigation remains ongoing.
