Five Things You Need to Know Today: October 7

1. Joe Schiavone will discuss the end of the line for the "Old Put" railroad that went through Westchester and Putnam counties at 7:30 p.m at the Hart Library. The event is called "Last Breath of Steam on the Old Put."

2. The Lakeland Board of Education will hold a work session on at 7:30 p.m. in the Lakeland Administration Building, 1086 East Main Street, in Shrub Oak. The meeting is open to the public, but there is no opportunity for public comment. On the agenda discussion include: first reading, board policies, public use of school district facilities; purchasing procedures, bullying, NYS test score presentation and future plans for curriculum, instruction and assessment.

3. Yorktown Games- Girls varsity soccer team play a home game against Somers, Girls varsity volleyball team play an away game against Panas. Lakeland Games- Girls varsity soccer team play Haldane at 7 p.m. at LHS, the girls JV soccer team play an away game against Haldane 4:30 p.m., the girls tennis team play an away game against Mahopac at 4:30 p.m. 

4. Residents can get their H1N1 flu shot today at Town Hall. This is a "combined" shot that covers both the standard influenza as well as the swine flu. Flu shots are offered between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. that day only. Anyone who is 18 years of age or older can receive a flu shot, and the cost is $30.00 per person – no insurance will be accepted. To make an appointment call Town Hall at 962-5722 ext. 271 or 201.

5. Teatown's monthly free environmental discussion group continues with rotating, timely topics. Today Dr. Peter Groffman, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, will present "What lies beneath: the invasion of exotic earthworms." The event is free and it starts at 7:30 p.m.
