Sleeping Man Accused Of Driving Drunk In Yorktown

A police officer said the man had been drinking before falling asleep in a car in a parking lot.

YORKTOWN, NY — A Mahopac man was accused of felony driving while intoxicated after being found asleep in an idling car.

The Yorktown Police Department said Jamal Maher, 33, of Mahopac, was charged Sunday with driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction in 10 years and aggravated driving while intoxicated with blood alcohol content of 0.18 percent or more with a previous conviction in 10 years, both felonies.

Police said, shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday, an officer on routine patrol saw a car idling in the parking lot of 1921 Commerce St. in Yorktown with a man asleep in the driver’s seat.

The officer checked on the man’s welfare and determined he had been operating the vehicle while intoxicated.

Maher was arrested and taken to Yorktown Police Headquarters for processing.

Upon further investigation, he was charged with having a blood alcohol content of 0.18 percent or more.

Maher was also found to have a previous conviction for driving while impaired by drugs within the previous 10 years, making the two charges felonies.

After being processed, he was issued an appearance ticket and released on his own recognizance to a responsible party.

Maher is due to appear in Yorktown Justice Court Nov. 3.
