"Somers' mascot honors the town's strong ties to the American circus, giving a nod to the elephant tusks," according to a description on the website. "The town is home to the Elephant Hotel, which was built by Hachaliah Bailey, who became known for acquiring the second elephant brought to America in the early 1800s. Bailey toured with the elephant known as Old Bet. P.T. Barnum called Bailey the father of the American circus."

After the second and regional rounds, six winners will then compete in the national round, beginning on March 15 and ending on March 25.
