Ulster Woman Killed In Crash With Tractor Trailer

The accident happened on southbound Interstate 87 in the town of New Paltz.

NEW PALTZ, NY — An Ulster County woman was killed Saturday when the car she was driving struck a tractor trailer on Interstate 87 in New Paltz.

The New York State Police said troopers responded to a crash around 11:30 p.m. Saturday on I-87 in the town of New Paltz involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor trailer.

A preliminary investigation found that Carlos L. Nunes, 43, of Kearny, New Jersey, was traveling south in the right lane near mile marker 78.9 when his tractor trailer was struck from behind.

Initially, Nunes thought he had a flat tire and was able to pull over onto the right shoulder.

Police said, when he saw the rear of the trailer, Nunes discovered he had been struck by a Toyota Avalon which had been lodge under the trailer. The car had significant damage, according to authorities.

Driving the Toyota was Darleen B. Halwick, 63, of Hurley. She was the sole occupant of the car.

Halwick was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ulster County Medical Examiner and was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital pending an autopsy.

State police said the crash remains under investigation.
