Yorktown Man Throws Hat in Ring for Highway Superintendent

Virgil Borrelli, the owner of a construction company, is seeking the Yorktown Democratic Committee nomination.

A Yorktown man, who has been in the construction field for the last two decades, has thrown his hat in the ring for the position of highway superintendent.

Virgil Borrelli, 38, said he met with members of the Yorktown Democratic Committee last week and he is seeking their nomination for the position.

Borrelli has been the owner of a construction company along with his brother Sam Borrelli Jr. for the last six years in Yonkers. However, he has been in the construction business with his family since he was 18.

He does heavy road construction work; puts, designs and fixes catch basins; does blacktop work and maintenance of roads. Borrelli said he also has experience managing a budget, estimating pricing of materials and looking for "good deals" on the same materials at a lower price.

"It's a passion," Borrelli said. "I really believe I am the best candidate out there."

Borrelli said should he get elected as highway superintendent he would want to make sure Yorktown's roads are safe, catch basins get cleaned up regularly and that the town is proactive about trees so they don't come down on wires. During the last storm, Borrelli said he was out of power for eight days.

He said he believes the town's highway department is operating well, but "there is always room for improvement."

Borrelli, whose father Sam Borrelli is the deputy DPW in Yonkers, said he helped run his father's campaign for the position. In addition, his father ran for councilman and mayor in Yonkers.

The man said he has a passion for public service and wants to give back to his community. That combined with his experience in the field, he said, makes him an ideal candidate.

"You really have to know what you're doing and I have a great passion for this town," he said.

Borrelli, who lives in Yorktown with his wife and their 4-year-old daughter, is a member of the Yorktown Elks Club, Knights of Columbus Society and St. Patrick's Church.

"I am more than experienced to do the job," the man said. "I am in it to win it."
