YORKTOWN, NY — The town of Yorktown unveiled its proposed 2023 budget Thursday, revealing a $65.4 million spending package.

Supervisor Matt Slater said the average home assessed at $10,000 would see a decrease in its town tax rate of about $25.59. The town’s 23 special taxing districts, which include specific parks and sewer districts, either remained flat or saw slight decreases.

“This year’s budget proposal once again respects local taxpayers, combats the inflation crisis and maintains Yorktown’s strong fiscal health,” Slater said in a news release.

He said the proposed budget will reduce both the tax levy and tax rate for the second time in the past three years. The proposed tax rate is 1.13 percent lower than in 2022.

Slater added that the spending package will allow the town to invest in the police department by hiring an additional officer in order to expand the traffic unit.

The town’s taxes, which fund the general operating budget including the library and highway department, make up 12 percent of the total property tax bill. Other portions of the tax bill include refuse and recycling service, fire and emergency medical services and water.

The Yorktown Town Board will review the budget and hold a public hearing Dec. 6. A budget must be adopted by the Town Board by Dec. 31.
