Yorktown's Hart Library Celebrates Black History Month Through Poetry

Poems by Black poets will be presented, and the public will get an opportunity to read a poem during the open mic portion of the event.

YORKTOWN, NY — Black History Month will be celebrated through poetry in Yorktown.

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, the John C. Hart Memorial Library will present poems by Black poets and the public can share one during the open mic portion of the program.

Library officials said the participants — all ages are welcome — will then be separated into three groups: children, teens and adults. The groups will take part in a “black out” poetry activity, where old books are used to make something new.

During the activity, everyone gets a page from a random book and a poem is created by blacking out some words — leaving only the words that you want to make up a poem.
