1,263 COVID-19 Cases, 48 Deaths Reported In NC: Update

North Carolina's coronavirus death toll rose by 48 lives lost in the state since Monday, state public health officials said Tuesday.

NORTH CAROLINA — The spread of coronavirus in North Carolina upped the state's tally by 1,263 cases Tuesday, increasing the number of known cases in the state to 146,779, according to data released by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

The state's coronavirus death toll rose by 48 Tuesday, increasing the number of lives lost to COVID-19 in the state to 2,396.

According to DHHS data reported Tuesday, about 7 percent of tests in North Carolina were positive.

Out of the state's tally of coronavirus cases, 234 positive COVID-19 confirmations were associated with ongoing outbreaks and clusters at 19 child care facilities and one school. According to DHS data, the school cluster was confirmed in Rowan County and included 14 positive COVID-19 cases.

After two days of falling to recent record lows, hospitalizations rose throughout the state. As of Tuesday, 1,026 patients were hospitalized with coronavirus-related illness in North Carolina, 46 more than reported Monday.

An Aug. 18 survey of 93 percent of the state's hospitals reported that there were 6,91 empty staffed inpatient hospital beds and 576 empty staffed intensive care unit beds remaining in the state. Ventilators also remained in supply, according to the survey, with 2,339 remaining available, DHHS said.

Globally, nearly 22 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and more than 775,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Tuesday afternoon. In the United States, more than 5.4 million people have been infected and more than 171,000 people have died from COVID-19.
