16-year-Old Dead Following Shooting At Apartment Complex

The teenager, who was shot in a Charlotte apartment complex, was the city's fifth homicide over the weekend, police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A homicide investigation is underway following an early morning shooting at a Charlotte apartment complex near Uptown that left a 16-year-old dead. The shooting marks the fifth homicide in Charlotte in the span of a weekend, according to police.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, at the Southside Homes apartment complex in the 3400 block of Griffith Street, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

By the time responding officers arrived at the scene, the victim — who was later identified as Vontairius Doster, 16 — was transported to Atrium Health's Carolina's Medical Center for treatment for his gunshot wound.

Detectives from CMPD's homicide unit responded to the scene and collected physical evidence, and the investigation remains active and ongoing, police said.

CMPD police chief Johnny Jennings urged community members to come forward with information about the shooting, WSOC said. “This is not where we want to be as a city,” he said. “To have to look at five homicides over a weekend is not something we should stand for. If you’re waking up and this is business as usual, then we have a problem.”

CMPD said anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
