📰 News we're reading

1. Mecklenburg County Awards $128K to Job Training Center for Residents in Recovery (kiss951.com) — Mecklenburg County is directing $128,000 in opioid settlement funds to NCIA VTC Charlotte, expanding free job training for residents in recovery, unhoused, or justice-involved. The Charlotte center, which partners with Charlotte Rescue Mission, has already prepared over 900 people for careers in HVAC, automotive repair, and commercial driving, helping many graduates secure full-time work.

2. Landlord sues burger restaurant, coffee shop over proposed Matthews locations (wsoctv.com) — A Matthews landlord is suing Charlotte-based Harriet’s Hamburgers and coffee shop Fly Kid Fly over alleged unpaid rent and fees tied to planned locations on West John Street. Harriet’s disputes the landlord’s account, says it sought more time to open, and still hopes to bring a restaurant to the Matthews community while Fly Kid Fly hasn’t commented yet.

3. For Bryce Young, the next thing is always the most important thing (statenews.net) — Charlotte Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is doubling down on a “flush it and move on” mindset as he leads the team into a crucial matchup with the Buccaneers and a shot at a division title. From Bank of America Stadium to the locker room, coaches and teammates say his calm, process-focused approach is shaping the offense’s confidence week to week.

4. Cabarrus County asks residents for input on housing funding (wsoctv.com) — Cabarrus County leaders are asking residents to complete a brief survey guiding how federal housing funds should be used to improve local neighborhoods. The story also highlights that Charlotte’s annual cost of living is just over $50,000, with a lower median income than nearby suburbs like Matthews, underscoring regional affordability pressures.

5. I-77 South toll road foes rally behind history of racial bias (thecharlottepost.com) — Charlotte residents along I-77 South are pushing back against a proposed expansion that would add privately operated toll lanes from Center City to the South Carolina line, arguing it repeats a history of highways cutting through Black neighborhoods. Advocates want NCDOT to abandon the toll plan, invest in frequent transit and reconnection projects, and say new lanes would worsen inequality and congestion despite the recently approved county transit tax.
