Charlotte Area Buses Offer Free Rides During Gas Shortage
Charlotte police urged area residents to remain patient as City of Charlotte tells workers to limit non-essential travel as a precaution.
CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Area Transit System is offering free rides throughout the Charlotte metro during the ongoing gas shortage, the public transit provider announced Wednesday.
The development comes days after a cyberattack temporarily shut down the Colonial Pipeline, prompting panic buying throughout the state. Wednesday morning, at least 71 percent of Charlotte stations had no gas left in their tanks for sale, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
"CATS is announcing fare-free transit for all community members during the temporary shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline to assist citizens with access to essential workplaces," CATS said.

CATS said it would make an announcement before it would resume collecting fares.
Tuesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management said the City of Charlotte, which maintains its own fuel reserve, continued to monitor the gas shortage and urged residents to report cases of price gouging.

"There is enough fuel supply at this time but the city is preparing for a prolonged interruption as a precaution to ensure essential services are maintained," it said in a statement. "City of Charlotte staff are being asked to limit non-essential travel as a precautionary measure."
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department also urged residents to remain patient during the gas outage.
"We understand the frustration and continue to encourage everyone to be patient. Only purchase the amount of fuel you need to ensure there is enough resources for others in our community," CMPD said.
