School board members sworn in (thecharlotteweekly.com) — Newly elected and returning members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education were sworn in this month, reshaping leadership across districts that span north, south, east, west and central Charlotte. The board re-elected Stephanie Sneed as chair and Dee Rankin as vice chair, and highlighted the diverse professional backgrounds the new members bring to overseeing CMS schools.
   

2. MEDIC locates missing 84-year-old Charlotte woman (wsoctv.com) — An 84-year-old Charlotte woman who went missing early Saturday from the Village Glen Lane area was safely located later that morning by MEDIC and reunited with her family. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police had asked the public for help, noting she may have been cognitively impaired and confused when she disappeared.
   

3. Man arrested, 15-year-old killed following east Charlotte hit-and-run (wsoctv.com) — A 15-year-old riding an electric bike has died from injuries suffered in a late-November hit-and-run crash on Driftwood Drive in east Charlotte, and police say the driver was arrested the next day. Detectives are working with the District Attorney’s Office on additional charges and are asking anyone who witnessed the collision at Driftwood Drive and Winterfield Place to contact them.
   

4. Residents win Netflix game show, ‘What's in the Box?' (thecharlotteweekly.com) — Two Charlotte entrepreneurs, Joey and Scott Linwell, just turned a Netflix game show win into a year-long, globe-trotting adventure funded by big-ticket prizes and $300,000 in Bitcoin. The longtime Queen City residents say they’ll share their travels online as they chase “robe life” goals from Paris and Finland to music festivals and Panthers games.
   

5. Judge accuses feds of violating rights of asylum seeker in Charlotte (newsobserver.com) — A federal judge in Charlotte sharply criticized immigration authorities for detaining an Egyptian asylum seeker who had complied with all requirements and ordered that he be brought before a Charlotte immigration judge within 48 hours. The judge questioned shifting government explanations, blocked any removal from the U.S. for now, and warned officials they could face contempt if they ignore his orders.
