CMPD Officer Dies After 18-Wheeler Hits Police Vehicles

The crash happened on I-85 Wednesday morning while police were working another crash.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings announced CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin was killed Wednesday morning after working a traffic crash on Interstate 85.

"It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin. Officer Goodwin proudly served the University City Division. I ask for your thoughts and prayers for the family of Officer Goodwin and the CMPD family. Rest easy hero, we have watch from here," CMPD Chief of Police Johnny Jennings shared on social media.

Police were responding to a crash on I-85 in northeast Charlotte at exit 45 southbound involving an 18-wheeler. Before 4 a.m., another 18-wheeler struck the police vehicles responding to the crash.

CMPD stated the road near the W.T. Harris Boulevard exit will be closed for an indefinite amount of time.
