1 Dead In NC School Shooting, Suspect Identified As Student
The shooting suspect was taken into custody without incident Wednesday evening, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said.
WINSTON-SALEM, NC — A student who was shot at a Winston-Salem high school Wednesday afternoon has died from his injuries, and the hourslong search for the suspect who opened fire at Mount Tabor High School ended without incident, authorities said Wednesday evening.
"The suspect from the shooting at Mt Tabor High School was taken into custody without incident," the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said. "The investigation is ongoing and we will release more information as appropriate. "
The shooting is the second one reported at a school in the state this week.

Several Winston-Salem schools were placed on lockdown midday Wednesday following the shooting. According to an early local report by WXII, the shooting was initially reported by a school resource officer assigned to Mount Tabor High School.
"There has been a shooting on school property," the Winston-Salem Police Department said. "We and the WSPD have secured the campus and are doing everything possible to keep students safe. We are actively investigating what happened and will share confirmed information when available."

The county sheriff's office confirmed a student was injured in the shooting, but did not initially list his condition. The victim was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson said Wednesday evening at a news conference.
Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. said the victim was identified as William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr.

Witnesses identified the shooting suspect to police and was believed to be a student at the school, she said, prior to the suspect's apprehension.
No other injuries were reported during the shooting, although one student in the school had a seizure during the lockdown, Thompson said.
Wednesday afternoon, Gov. Roy Cooper said he had authorized state-level resources to support the hunt for the suspected shooter.
"For the second time this week, we have seen a shooting in a North Carolina school," Cooper said. "Our prayers are with the victims, their families and all the students of Mt. Tabor High School in Winston-Salem. I have been briefed by law enforcement and the Department of Public Safety is ready to provide any support necessary. We must work to ensure the safety of students and educators, quickly apprehend the shooter and keep guns off school grounds."
