Officer Inmates, Inmates Fight At Mecklenburg Detention Center
A fight ensued between detention officers and residents at MCDCC.
CHARLOTTE, NC — A fight broke out after midnight Monday at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center between an officer and inmates, authorities said.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office said several inmates at the detention center taunted an officer who found himself surrounded by four inmates. Officer NaQuan Clare reportedly hit an inmate as they crowded and threatened him. A fight ensued, leaving Clare hurt. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
“Unfortunately, this is a reality our detention officers face during their day-to-day duties; in addition to working with staff shortages and preventing the spread of COVID-19 in our facilities. Five MCSO Detention Officers recently attended de-escalation training to help prevent incidents like this from occurring,” McFadden said.
