CMPD trains new recruits in effort to fill vacancies (wsoctv.com) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are training just over 100 recruits in three academy classes to help close roughly 270 officer vacancies across the city. The eight-month program emphasizes integrity, evolving training, and de-escalation as CMPD works to strengthen staffing and culture on Charlotte’s streets.
   

2. Suspect arrested in connection with south Charlotte double homicide (wsoctv.com) — A suspect has been arrested in connection with a late-December double shooting in south Charlotte that left two young men dead after arriving at the hospital with gunshot wounds from Farmhurst Drive. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say video evidence places the suspect in the car when shots were fired, and he now faces a murder charge plus a count for firing into an occupied apartment.
   

3. Two Black Administrators at UNC Charlotte Recognized for Advancing Fraternity and Sorority Life (jbhe.com) — Two UNC Charlotte administrators have earned national recognition for their leadership in fraternity and sorority life, highlighting the university’s growing Greek community. Kevin Bailey and Michelle Guobadia were honored by the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors for long-term work in student success, hazing prevention, and expanding opportunities for Charlotte students involved in Greek life.
   

4. 3 Charlotte-area restaurants closed this week + what's next for Gastonia brewery (charlotteobserver.com) — Charlotte’s dining scene is shifting, with Sycamore Brewing’s South End taproom closing indefinitely and rebranding its LLC as Club West Brewing, while Matthews favorite Athens Pizza & Kabob shuts down after 19 years. Gastonia’s Cavendish Brewing has also closed following the owner’s retirement and will be renovated and reopened under Charlotte-based Sugar Creek Brewing.
   

5. 1-9-26: French Reporter Talks Iryna; Rep Moore Joins (wbt.com) — A French journalist from Le Monde has come to Charlotte to better understand last summer’s stabbing on the city’s light rail, which has drawn attention on French social media. The segment also features Rep. Tim Moore reflecting on his first year representing North Carolina’s 14th District, all in a new episode of the local show Breaking With Brett Jensen.
