Quest To Replace Ella Scarborough Whittled Down To 4 Candidates

Ella Scarborough is in hospice, and her temporary replacement will be selected from four candidates.

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will appoint a new member to serve as a temporary At-Large County Commissioner through Dec. 5, and they're down to four options.

Commissioner Ella Scarborough is on hospice care.

The Board discussed 17 eligible applicants at its Budget/Public Policy Workshop this week and nominated four of the applicants to be interviewed. County Commissioners are scheduled to interview the four nominated applicants on Saturday, March 12 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center in Room 267, 600 E. 4th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Members of the public can access and view the meeting in-person, on the Government Channel, or online at watch.mecknc.gov.

To qualify for consideration, applicants were required to reside in Mecklenburg County, be qualified to vote in Mecklenburg County, be at least 21 years of age, be registered to vote, and be registered as a Democrat. Each of the below listed applicants met the minimum eligibility requirements established by the Board.

Four total nominees to be interviewed:

· Mary T. McCray
· Wilhelmenia I. Rembert
· Sam Spencer

The Board unanimously approved a request for medical leave from Commissioner At-Large Ella Scarborough during its Budget Public Policy meeting on Feb. 8, 2022. North Carolina General Statutes (NCGS) § 128-40 permits the Board of County Commissioners to appoint a temporary replacement for the period of the official’s leave of absence.

A total of 22 applications were received for the temporary At-Large County Commissioner seat. Of the 22 applications, three did not meet the eligibility requirements set by the Board of County Commissioners and two chose to withdraw from consideration.
