'Flower House' at Cleveland - Lakewood Border Gets Attention of Building and Housing Department

The house at Lakewood Hts. and 139th is a sight you cannot un-see.

If you've driven just east of 140th/Bunts Road on Lakewood Hts. Blvd, no doubt you've seen this house. Some might describe the decor as never-ending Mardi Gras. The house is in Cleveland, right across the street from the Lakewood border.

Neighbors say that the elaborate decorations have grown like a virus over the last several years. The home boasts a voluminous amount of plastic ornate flowers and decorations. Some of the decorations are hanging in trees and on fences, some are free-standing.

newsnet5 Cleveland reports that the decorations have garnered the attention of a city councilman and the Cleveland Building and Housing Department - again. One resident, Mickey Barrett, who is trying to sell his home across the street is particularly upset.

“As days go by, they just keep adding on and adding on. It’s depreciating the values of the houses in the neighborhood,” Barrett told newsnet5 Cleveland.

Cleveland's Ward 16 Councilman Brian Kazy is aware of the issue and the frustration of neighbors like Mickey Barrett. Kazy said that unfortunately, no ordinances or legislation currently exist that deal with an "overabundance of decorations."

Kazy told newsnet5 that he planned to meet a building and housing inspector at the house Friday morning to check for other violations and installations which might require a permit. Kazy also said that mediation between the home owner and neighbors is in the works.

Not all people oppose the house's decorative tastes, there are many commenters on the newsnet5 Cleveland story who say that they love the house and feel that the city should probably focus on other issues.
