Frozen Shrimp Sold At Meijer's Recalled Over Salmonella Concern

OHIO — Frozen cooked shrimp is being recalled across the U.S. and in Ohio.

Avanti Frozen Foods, of India, is recalling its frozen shrimp products, which were imported to the U.S. between November 2020 and May 2021. The FDA said the shrimp could be contaminated by salmonella.

The frozen shrimp was sold at multiple retailers, including Meijer's, Food Lion, and Nature's Promise, Harbor Banks, Hos, First Street, CWNO Brand, Big River, 365, Cos, Censea, Ahold, Sandbar, Sea Cove, Waterfront Bistro, Wellsley Farms, WFNO Brands, and Hannaford.

Illnesses possibly caused by the shrimp have been reported in Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, and Rhode Island.

"Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain," the FDA said.

"In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis," the FDA said.
