Giant Eagle Joins List Of Companies Mandating Masks For Employees
The popular grocery chain is joining a growing list of retailers asking shoppers to again don masks.
OHIO — Popular grocery chain Giant Eagle is again mandating employees wear masks while working. The new policy goes into effect on Wednesday.
Employees at all grocery stores, retail support center and corporate offices will be required to wear either a face mask, cloth face covering or face shield, the company announced. The rise of the delta variant prompted the change in masking policy, according to company officials.
"Taking this important step will allow us to best protect one another and our guests," the company said in a statement.

While shoppers won't be required to wear masks, the company is "strongly requesting" customers begin wearing masks again starting Friday. Complimentary masks will be available at each store for customers who need one.
"Additionally, our Giant Eagle curbside pickup and delivery service continues to be available for all guests who prefer the convenience of having one of our expertly trained Team Members shop for them," the company said.

Giant Eagle officials said the rise of the delta variant prompted the change in mask policies across their stores. As COVID-19 case numbers increase, the company wants to reduce the role its store may play in spread the virus.
To further stymie the delta variant, Giant Eagle is also increasing its efforts to teach employees about the benefits and risks of COVID-19 vaccinations. Company leaders are also considering mandating vaccines for employees.
Target announced it would require employees to begin masking up again, starting Tuesday. Shoppers will also be "strongly recommended" to wear masks while shopping, the retailer said. Other companies mandating masks for employees in areas of high COVID-19 spread include: Walmart, Kroger, Home Depot, and McDonald's.
The announcement come as the highly-infectious delta variant of the coronavirus is causing a surge in new cases and hospitalizations across the United States. Ohio officials have started recommending students wear masks in classrooms this year, though mandates will be difficult to issue due to legislative changes in the Buckeye State.
