WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Jim Jordan is among five Republicans recommended for a panel investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Jordan, an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump, was selected because of his divergent political viewpoints and unique areas of expertise, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said. Three of the five recommended Republicans, including Jordan, voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election, CNN noted.

The other Republicans recommended for the panel include Reps. Rodney Davis, from Illinois, Jim Banks, from Indiana, Kelly Armstrong, from North Dakota, and Troy Nehls, from Texas. Banks would be the top Republican on the panel, if approved.

Both McCarthy and Jordan could conceivably be called as witnesses during the panel investigation.

Jordan is arguably the most well-known of the five Republicans. He gained a level of national fame during the impeachment trials against Trump, where Jordan served as the embattled president's most vocal defender.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi will have to approve the recommendations before the Republicans are added to the panel.

Riots in Washington, D.C. were sparked on Jan. 6 as the U.S. Congress moved to count the Electoral College votes from the November presidential election. Far right supporters of President Donald Trump, who lost to President Joe Biden, stormed barricades and forced their way into the Capitol building, disrupting the process.

The mayhem overwhelmed Capitol Police, who evacuated members of Congress as violence escalated.

More than 535 people have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 riots, CBS News reported. Approximately 300 suspects remain unidentified.
