Blaine Griffin Re-elected as Hopeful Council Sworn in at City Hall (clevescene.com) — Cleveland’s newly seated 119th City Council has been sworn in, with Blaine Griffin re-elected as council president and three newcomers joining the 15-member body. Members emphasized unity and a focus on core local issues like safety, housing, schools, food access, and basic city services as they begin a new term at City Hall.
   

2. Suspect who threatened, fought with Cleveland officers now indicted: I-Team (fox8.com) — A man accused of threatening Cleveland officers with a pickaxe and crowbar near the West Side Market has been indicted on multiple felony counts, including assault on police. Prosecutors say officers used a Taser and fired shots without injuring him, and bodycam video shows a group of officers ultimately making the arrest as the case now moves through Cuyahoga County court.
   

3. Slavic Village art installation now being removed due to repeat vandalism (news5cleveland.com) — A beloved public art installation in Slavic Village at 5400 Broadway Avenue is being taken down after repeated vandalism and damage from recent windstorms. Lifelong Clevelander David Biro plans to store and re-engineer the piece, hoping to return it by summer while continuing his push for more neighborhood public art across Cleveland.
   

4. Ohio sees surge in flu cases as 30 states report very high activity levels (news5cleveland.com) — Cuyahoga County is seeing an unusually early and intense flu surge, with more than 2,600 ER visits and over 200 hospitalizations since September, according to local health officials. Cleveland Clinic Children’s experts say flu is widespread across outpatient offices, ERs, and hospitals, leading to longer wait times for care across the Cleveland area.
   

5. Great Lakes shippers warn about the impact of icebreaking operations in final days of season (news5cleveland.com) — Ice buildup on the Great Lakes is slowing freighters that supply iron ore to Cleveland Cliffs through the Port of Cleveland, raising concerns about winter steel production and jobs. Shipping leaders warn an aging icebreaker fleet and limited Canadian support could force cargo cancellations before the Soo Locks close January 15, though port officials say delays here are manageable so far.
