Leading news outlets published photos by Sarah Stier (Class of 2014/Alter HS) when Alex Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky's NHL goals record

As the sports world watched to see if hockey legend Alexander Ovechkin would break Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goals record, photojournalist Sarah Stier was ready with her cameras.

Stier, a 2014 graduate of Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, was at UBS Arena on Long Island when Ovechkin scored his 895th goal, surpassing Gretzky’s record of 984.

Based in New York, Stier joined global media service Getty Images in 2020. She graduated from Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication in 2018.

Leading news outlets posted Stier’s photos including Ovechkin celebrating with a bellyflop on the ice after breaking the record.

Stier covers top sporting events: baseball, horse racing, boxing, tennis, skiing, football, basketball, and more. In 2024, she photographed aquatics at the Paris Olympics.
