Ohio Connections Academy Recognizes Local Students

Star Student Award recognizes students for achievement in and out of the virtual classroom

Zachary Enscoe of Dayton, and Allison Knueven of Springboro, were recently named among Ohio Connections Academy’s (OCA) Star Students of the Month for December in recognition of their hard work and leadership in the online classroom.

Zachary, a second grader at the statewide online public charter school, was nominated by his teacher, Ms. Grinstead, because of his hard work and his academic growth this year. Allison is in the fifth grade and was nominated by her teacher, Ms. Schank, because of her outstanding participation in class.

As Star Students, Zachary and Allison will each be presented with certificates recognizing their achievement and be profiled in Ohio Connections Academy’s student newsletter and on the school’s social media platforms. Each month during the school year OCA will recognize students in grades K through 12 who are excelling in the virtual classroom.

“The faculty, staff and members of the board at Ohio Connections Academy are proud to recognize students like Zachary and Allison and the commitment they demonstrate to our school and their community,” said OCA Superintendent Marie Hanna. “Each of our Star Students is a leader in the classroom and demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to learning – they truly deserve this recognition.”

According to Zachary’s mother, Brienne, they enrolled Zachary in Ohio Connections Academy in 2020 because they like having the flexibility of learning from home and being more involved in his education. Among the things Brienne appreciates the most about Ohio Connections Academy is the support they receive from the teachers.

“I love how involved the teachers are really helping Zachary when he needs the extra help,” she said. “I love all the videos and resources available to my student.”

Allison came to Ohio Connections Academy in 2020 to be in a safe learning environment that also offered a flexible schedule and a curriculum that better aligned with her individual needs. According to her mother, Heather, attending a virtual school has allowed Allison to grow in her independence and to take ownership of her educational journey.

“The curriculum has been fantastic in allowing Allie to learn and grow at her own pace,” Heather said. “She thrives at OCA as she is finally being challenged academically.”

Virtual school is a great fit for a variety of students and each student is unique. Those who attend Ohio Connections Academy come from different backgrounds and choose full-time online school for various reasons. Some students prefer to take ownership of their education and benefit from the flexibility that virtual school offers, while others are looking for a consistent, safe learning environment.
