📰 News we're reading

1. Neighborhood residents react to Toledo Heights Library closure (toledofreepress.com) — Toledo Heights neighbors are losing their longtime branch library on Dec. 30 as Toledo Lucas County Public Library closes the aging, costly building to tackle a budget deficit and accessibility issues. Services will shift to Heatherdowns while the system plans a new “super branch” on Detroit Avenue, leaving a three-year gap that especially affects South Toledo residents who rely on Wi-Fi, kids’ meals, and walkable access.

2. City of Toledo asks council to approve funding for warming centers (toledoblade.com subscription) — Toledo officials are asking City Council to approve $80,000 so overnight warming centers can operate from Dec. 15 to April 15, offering safe heated spaces and transportation on frigid nights. Centers at St. Paul’s United Methodist and Leading Families Home serve individuals, couples, and families when temperatures drop below 15 degrees, and residents can watch the city’s Facebook page or call 211 for more help.

3. Amanda Pirooz Receives a Helping Hand (13abc.com) — A Toledo TV station and Yark Automotive Group have teamed up to give a $1,300 boost to Bowling Green resident Amanda Pirooz, who is battling Lyme disease and other serious health issues. She’s trying to afford specialized treatment in Arizona that isn’t covered by insurance, and says the local support is helping her keep fighting through daily struggles.

4. Northwest Ohio lawmakers react to Senate passing marijuana, intoxicating hemp restrictions (wtol.com) — Toledo readers may see marijuana rules tighten as Senate Bill 56 heads to Gov. DeWine after passing the Ohio Senate. Toledo Sen. Paula Hicks-Hudson criticizes the measure as undermining voters, while Republican leaders and an industry group say it protects public safety and reshapes how intoxicating hemp and recreational marijuana are sold statewide.

5. Paws and Whiskers gets larger facility for cat shelter (toledoblade.com subscription) — Toledo’s only nonprofit no-kill cat shelter, Paws and Whiskers on Hillwyck Drive, is moving into a much larger building near Holland after years of turning away cats due to lack of space. The 17,000-square-foot facility needs major renovations but should open by summer, allowing the shelter to house more cats and is prompting fresh calls for donations of litter and food.
