Ribbon cut on $1.5M renovation project at Boys and Girls Club (wkbn.com) — A major $1.5 million renovation at the Boys and Girls Club on Oak Hill Avenue is transforming a longtime South Side staple with a new gym, teen center and dedicated learning spaces. Leaders hope the upgrades, plus a planned community park breaking ground next summer, will spark more affordable housing and renewed neighborhood investment in Youngstown.
   

2. Woman who rescinded guilty plea has May 18 trial date (vindy.com) — A Youngstown woman who previously pleaded guilty in a child’s 2023 drowning at her Ridgelawn Avenue home now has a new trial set for May 18 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The judge allowed her to withdraw the earlier plea and emphasized minimizing further trauma for the child’s family, while the defendant remains free after release from prison last month.
   

3. Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown appoints interim director (mahoningmatters.com) — Youngstown’s Butler Institute of American Art has named local native Larry W. Jones as interim director as longtime leader Louis Zona steps into a director emeritus role. Jones will oversee daily operations and help search for a permanent director, while Zona continues supporting the transition after more than four decades of expanding the museum’s collection and programs.
   

4. Altrusa Youngstown, Goodwill celebrate milestone of 20,000 donated books (mahoningmatters.com) — A Youngstown-based volunteer literacy effort just passed a big milestone, with Altrusa Youngstown and Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries distributing more than 20,000 donated books since April 2023. Volunteers rescue unsold books and share them with local schools, libraries, health centers, and nonprofits across Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties to boost reading access for all ages.
   

5. Santa's Workshop takes shape at Potential Development (wytv.com) — Youngstown families of children at Potential Development are getting a little holiday relief as 325 students pick out free gifts for their loved ones at the school’s annual Santa’s Workshop. Backed by donations from board member Deloran Muransky Thompson, her family and friends, the event lets kids with autism experience the pride of choosing and wrapping presents themselves.
