Blue Star Celebrates Nat'l Donut Day With Fundraiser

A portion of the proceeds collected on June 1 from Blue Star's 7 Portland-area shops will be donated to Saturday Academy.

PORTLAND, OR — In honor of National Donut Day June 1, Blue Star Donuts will release a surprise new donut at all seven Portland metro locations and donate 10 percent of the day's donut proceeds to Saturday Academy, a local nonprofit that offers science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes, camps, and internships to kids in grades 2 through 12.

Offering hard apple cider fritters, cointreau creme brûlée, and powdered PB&J-filled donuts, Blue Star's eclectic mix of fancy fried-cakes has helped the business rise to the top of the artisan donut scene in both Portland and Los Angeles, where the company operates two locations.

“National Donut Day is definitely the most fun ‘holiday’ in the donut world, and with all the extra love we get from our community it’s a great opportunity for us to be able to pay it forward,” Katie Poppe, co-founder and CEO of Blue Star, said in a statement. “This year, we worked with Lindsey Murphy (aka Crazy Aunt Lindsey) to make a ‘donut science’ video, and it was so much fun! Since then STEM has been a big topic of conversation around here, and we were so excited to discover Saturday Academy and the incredible work they’re doing with kids in our own backyard.”

Saturday Academy has been sharing STEAM education with metro region kids for the past 35 years, Blue Star officials said, noting the organization's small class sizes and expert instructors as direct contributors to the nonprofit's longtime academic success.

The financial assistance provided by Blue Star's Donut Day donation will reportedly help fund programs specifically for low-income families.
