Suspects smash vehicle into SE Portland House of Pipes on Christmas Eve (koin.com) — A Southeast Portland smoke shop is facing about $20,000 in damage after multiple suspects rammed a vehicle through its front windows on Southeast Hawthorne early Christmas Eve and stole merchandise. Portland police are investigating the smash-and-grab, and the longtime House of Pipes business is urging continued support from the city and community while repairs are underway.
   

2. Henry Sakamoto, longtime Portland civic leader, dies at 98 (kgw.com) — Portlanders are remembering Henry Sakamoto, a lifelong resident and key civic leader who helped bring the iconic cherry trees and Japanese American Historical Plaza to the downtown waterfront. The 98-year-old community advocate, interned as a teen during World War II, went on to shape cultural institutions like the Japanese American Museum of Oregon and strengthen Oregon–Japan ties.
   

3. Striking healthcare providers in Portland area reject tentative agreement with Legacy (kptv.com) — Striking advanced practice providers at Legacy Health hospitals and clinics across the Portland metro area have rejected a tentative contract agreement and will remain on strike. Union leaders cite bad-faith bargaining and uncompetitive wages, while Legacy says it’s committed to continued talks. Both sides say they’re ready to return to the bargaining table soon.

Hillsboro's Glencoe High School band to march in London New Year's parade (koin.com) — Portland-area readers have a local reason to tune into London’s New Year’s Day parade: Hillsboro’s Glencoe High School band, highlighted in a Portland dateline report, will be the first Oregon band ever to march in the event. Forty-four students, fresh off a Carnegie Hall appearance two years ago, will also perform a concert at historic Smith Square, with the parade airing live on Jan. 1, 2026.
