📰 News we're reading

1. Thieves breach SE Portland smoke shop with car on Christmas Eve (oregonlive.com) — A Southeast Portland smoke shop suffered a costly Christmas Eve burglary after thieves rammed a car through its storefront and stole merchandise, part of a string of similar break-ins at the chain’s locations. Police data show overall burglaries in Portland have declined since 2022, and a new multi-agency task force is targeting organized groups hitting small and medium-sized businesses.

2. 'Arrest first, ask questions later': Judge orders on-the-spot release of Beaverton man that CPB detained without a warrant (kgw.com) — A federal judge in Portland ordered the immediate courtroom release of a Beaverton man after ruling that immigration officers violated his due process rights. The man was mistakenly arrested at his apartment complex, then held at Portland’s ICE facility without a warrant until officers drafted one after the fact, raising sharp questions about local immigration enforcement practices.

3. Where We Live: Portland's giant Martini House (koin.com) — A towering, light-up martini glass in Portland’s Southwest Hills is once again lighting up the skyline, continuing a neighborhood tradition that dates back to the 1960s. Architect Aaron Hall, who doesn’t drink, rebuilt the “Martini House” and created the 30-by-30-foot LED sign visible from across the east side, vowing it will remain a holiday fixture for future owners.

4. How to send your Christmas tree on it's merry way after the holidays in the Portland metro (kptv.com) — If your Christmas tree is still twinkling in the living room, Portland-area agencies have laid out clear options to recycle it responsibly. From Metro’s searchable recycling guide to county-specific resources and the City of Portland’s holiday garbage tips, you can quickly find drop-off sites, nonprofit collection events, and rules for curbside disposal across the metro area.

5. ‘Nice powder': Skiers, snowboarders excited after Mt. Hood Meadows delayed opening (koin.com) — If you’ve been waiting to ski, Mt. Hood Meadows is finally open after the latest start in more than 30 years, with four of 10 runs operating and more coming as snow builds. From Portland, you can now plan trips knowing ticket sales are back on, staff are working again, and night skiing plus Mt. Hood Express could start as soon as Saturday.
