Columbia Slough Warning Issued After Sewage Overflow At Plant

Portland says that a malfunctioning gate led to an overflow of sewage into the Columbia Slough for about 20 minutes.

PORTLAND, OR – If you were thinking about heading toward the Columbia Slough, you should wait until Saturday. That's the word from Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services.

They say that a sewage and stormwater overflow Wednesday night prompted the warning.

The cause of the overflow was malfunctioning automatic gate that didn't close.

Officials say that they are not sure how large the overflow actually was.

It happened in the area of North Portland Road. Signs are posted in the affected area.

The plant manages and treats wastewater from the city's moe than 600,000 residents and businesses, removing solids and other contaminants.
