Driver In Portland Fatal Crash Drank, 'Got Smashed:' Court Docs

Calum Breitenberg, iindicted on charges of DUI and manslaughter, told police that "I'm too drunk to be driving," according to court records.

PORTLAND, OR – Around 11:30 on the night of Nov. 15, Calum Breitenberg was driving his Volvo on North Willamette Boulevard at at least one witness would describe as about 80 mph. Police say that he hit a Honda Civic – pushing it on to the sidewalk – as well as several garbage and recycling containers, cut a tree apart, uprooted a street sign, and dislodged about 300 pounds of landscape rock.

He also struck and killed 32-year-old Jason Barns who had been walking along collecting cans, according to police.

"I'm too drunk to be driving," Breitenberg told a responding officer, according to court documents. "I was just down the street drinking with my friends. I was out with friends and got smashed."

On Nov. 27, Breitenberg was indicted on charges of DUI, reckless driving. and manslaughter.

A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.

He is scheduled to be back in court on Jan. 7, 2019.
